ALERT: SB 553

  This will be the second year this bill passed the Senate with Zero nays and went to the house.This Bill was sent to committee and could be called as early as next week, since it has to be called before the deadline for Bills is met. Last year, this Bill did not even get called by the House Executive Committee, stopping it from being heard and sent to the floor. 

I along with House Representatives continue to work towards a better quality of life in our communities, are in Springfield and working to allow this to come to committee this session. All MHOAI members really need to put pressure on the House Executive Committee members to do the right thing and follow the lead of the Senate. 

This Bill fills a GAP in the current Law that would finally authorize the Illinois Department of Public Health to assign real dollar fines to landlords that fail to maintain their properties as required under current law. The point you want to make with each member of the House Executive Committee is this: If the landlord or their representative follows current Illinois Law then the IDPH will not and cannot assign fines . This Bill is the hammer to ensure properties are maintained. Today the Departments that regulate health code violations, such as dealing with sewer, roads, trees and installation of homes can do no more than write letters to development companies and landlords letting them know that they are in violation of Illinois state laws. This would put in place a fine and allow the landlord a hearing when the landlord does not fix a health code violation.

MHOAI can be in Springfield but we still need you to call the House Executive Committee, I can not stress the importance of your calls, e-mails, and faxes to remind representatives that I am not along with these efforts as opponents to this bill would like representatives to believe.
