SCHOOLS ACCEPT ASSESSMENT DEAL WITH TRAILER PARK

June 22, 2000

OLYMPIA FIELDS -- The Rich Township District 227 Board of Education voted this week to approve a settlement with the owners of a Matteson mobile home retirement community on the assessment of their property for 1998 and 1999.

Cook County had assessed the land at $1,124,000, but Maple Brook LLC, owner of Maple Brook Mobile Home Park south of U.S. Highway 30 and Central Avenue, had countered, saying the land should be assessed at $705,000.

The agreement between the company and School District 227, as well as Elementary School District 159 and Prairie State Community College District 515, allows for a 1997 assessment of $819,000, a 1998 assessment of $1 million and a 1999 assessment of $1,100,000.

The agreement also stipulates that should families with teens ever live in the park and the teens attend one of the district's schools, the company would need to pay the student's tuition. The agreement is in effect for 20 years.

Harold Huang, assistant superintendent, also told the board the district had reached a settlement with Ace Hardware in Matteson in which the district will lose between $20,000 and $25,000.
