2nd Annual MHO Day Planned
by Terry Nelson, MHOAI President,March, 2002
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, May 14, when we return to Springfield for our 2nd Annual Manufactured Homeowners Day. The kick-off rally begins at 11am on the first floor of the Illinois Senate. Guest speakers will include Pat Metz of the Illinois Department of Public Health and State Senator Christine Radogno. We have also invited other officials who have shown their support for our issues to speak during the kick-off rally. For more information, contact mhoai1@aol.com
We planned the rally for the last week of the spring Legislative session before our legislators return to their home district offices. During our rally we will remind them that we, the voters and homeowners, have issues that must be considered while they are working among their constituents and in Springfield. Last year we surprised many of our legislators by showing them that we are organized and concerned. Some never expected us to come to Springfield and demand action on our issues. Others never realized how many of their constituents need and demand a hearing.
We can and will hold our elected officials accountable for fair, balanced laws that reflect the needs of homeowners during this day and throughout the year. When legislators see us gathered together as a large, determined group, they will remember us and they will know we have the final say during the November election.
We had approximately 300 homeowners attend the first MHO Day and rally. Homeowners who attended were excited and they knew they had made a difference. This year we need even more homeowners to speak to our elected officials and share our concerns.
Our rally last year introduced many of you to the need for MHOAI and our representation in Springfield during the legislative sessions when laws are debated, discussed and sent to the legislature for a vote. For too many years, legislators heard only from the landlords and development companies who regularly dismissed your needs and concerns. Legislators have far more difficulty dismissing you when you are standing in front of them or watching the legislative process.
If you attended last year, tell your neighbors how your presence did make a difference. Encourage them to attend with you this year. Those who took the time to be present last year reported a camaraderie with their neighbors and fellow homeowners. It was a chance for neighbors to share their experiences and learn they are not alone in their fight to ease the old misconceptions of trailers and trailer parks.
Join us in our efforts to educate our officials that we are Illinois residents and not second class citizen because of our choice of community, or house structure. We can only bury the past by marching into Springfield and demonstrating the reality.
- Kick-off rally starts at 11 am, first floor of the Illinois Senate Building.
- We will then break off into small groups to meet with as many legislators as possible.
- You can take a moment to sit in the galleries and view our legislators debating and voting on laws.
- There are cafeterias open all day.
No one else is going to do this for us! If you want changes, it is up to you to attend and demand to be counted!
